What holds up at the shore
Built for the conditions.
A beach house is a harder job than an inland one, and the failures are predictable. Painted hardwood louvers swell and stick in summer humidity. Cheap hardware pits and seizes within a couple of seasons of salt air. South and west elevations facing open water get light nothing inland ever sees, and it bleaches fabric and flooring.
So we specify differently down here: composite louvers and frames where the house is close to the water, corrosion-resistant hardware throughout, and solar shades on the water-facing glass where you want to keep the view and lose the heat. Where a room genuinely suits hardwood — an inland-facing study, a guest room — we will say so.
To be clear about what these are not: interior plantation shutters are a light, privacy and finish product. They are not storm protection, and we will not sell them to you as such.
